Bosei

Bosei is an oversized suspended light sculpture in pink beige, cast in alabaster plaster and carved by hand, its shell opening in places to reveal the warm golden light held inside. It is made in an edition of 8. The piece is about motherhood. While sculpting it we were looking for the point where protection and comfort meet, the strong outer shell on one side and the warmth showing through the openings on the other. Together they tell of the quiet transformation that motherhood brings. Getting the balance of its mass right took six months of trial and error. We wanted a sculpture that keeps shifting, one that feels correct from every angle, so we adjusted the geometry until walking around it felt natural and continuous, the light playing in different shades across the form. Each Bosei is cast and carved by hand, and each one leaves the studio a little different from the last.
